Miscellaneous Classroom Activities:

Fall

2007

It has been a very warm and beautiful fall season.  Many of the classrooms have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather to utilize the garden.

Here are a few examples of activities in the Learning garden.  The Kindergarteners have spent some time in the garden learning about seeds and how seeds travel.  The 2nd graders were investigating what was living and nonliving in the garden. They will also be learning about bulbs the week of October 22 and will be planting red tulips in their Teaching Beds.  The red tulips will tie into Drug Prevention Awareness and will also be part of a study on the Journey North Website.   (click here for more info)

Spring

 2007

It has been an exciting spring in the Learning Garden as the summer flowers are beginning to blossom!

It was a beautiful sight to see the hundreds of bulbs that the 2nd and 3rd graders planted last fall come into bloom this spring in the Peace Garden area.

Many teachers have taken advantage of the warm spring weather to utilize the garden as an outdoor classroom.   The 1st and 5th graders have collaborated on their teaching bed and have planted a patriotic display of red, white and blue flowers.   The Kindergarten butterfly garden has had a butterfly house added to it.  Click here to view a picture of the teaching beds.

Last week compost that was donated from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo was spread in the Learning Garden.  This nutrient-rich compost will not only be great for the soil and the plants but will be a great educational resource for the students as they learn about various ways of recycling.

Over the next few weeks, the beautiful ceramic tiles that the students painted in January will be installed in the Learning Garden.

Winter

2006-2007

  • Advent- each classroom made a wreath and decorated it with nature themes

Fall

2006

  • 4th graders visited the Learning Garden during their Religion class and shared their appreciation for God's gift of nature
  • Several art classes incorporated the garden into their curriculum.  The 3rd grade, after studying the artwork of Georgia O'Keefe, drew some of the flowers and plants in the garden after using a magnifying glass to look at them more closely
  • Our 2nd graders visited the garden and wrote down the names of living and nonliving things that they saw.  As they made their notations, they stopped and examined various insects and plants which they pointed out to their teacher.  They are also talking about seeds and will be going out to the garden to look at the seeds inside the plants.
  • The 5th grade visited the Learning Garden and observed the beauty of the plants and flowers.  The students wrote down the names of 5 plants that were new to them.  They also enjoyed finding their names on the bricks and observing some lovely Monarch butterflies on their migration flight to Mexico.
  • The 6th grade held a science lab in the garden and read a story Everyone Needs a Rock
  • The 8th graders visited the Learning Garden during an English class.  They read the poem " The Power of One", and reflected in their writing journals
  • Our 3rd graders met in the garden for a special science lesson on the needs of plants.  They explained how light and water are necessary for plants to grow.  A lesson on appreciating the beauty of God's creation was correlated to science.
  • The Kindergarteners were very creative with their Scarecrow project that was displayed in the garden
